Norethindrone (norethisterone) is a progestin-only pill, also known as the mini pill. Your doctor can help you decide if the progestin-only mini pill is for you. Norethindrone is an oral birth control medication that prevents pregnancy causing changes in the vaginal environment – namely thickening fluids to prevent the sperm from reaching the egg. In some women, Norethindrone is also able to prevent the release of the egg.

Norethindrone is also known as the mini-pill and does not contain any estrogen. Norethindrone may be a safer choice for women over the age of 35 who smoke or women who are breastfeeding or have other contraindications to estrogen due to certain medical conditions. Norethindrone is also sometimes used to treat the symptoms of endometriosis.
