Weight loss medications may be part of a weight loss program and work best when combined with lifestyle changes. Weight loss medications may jump start your weight loss when used in conjunction with a nutrition treatment plan, behavioral modifications, and exercise.
Every insurance plan is different. If you want to use insurance benefits for a prescription, check your insurance plan’s formulary to learn about what medications are included in your plan.
Some medications are only covered for certain conditions or with certain requirements. If a medication is covered by your insurance plan, you may still have a copay. Your insurance company may have lower copay pricing at different pharmacies.
To learn more about your coverage, call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask the following questions:
- Do you cover medications for my condition?
- Which medications do you cover?
- Will I have a copay?
- Is prior authorization required for any of these medications?
- What are the requirements to receive a prior authorization?
- Is there a preferred pharmacy for my insurance plan?
Your insurance may require a prior authorization in order to cover the cost of a medication.
Please note:
Currently, Medicare, Medicaid, and other state- or federally-funded plans cannot be used for any prescription written by an Alpha provider. If you have one of these plans, you will have to pay the cash price for medication, if your plan allows.
If you receive a prescription for a weight loss medication and want to use your insurance benefits to help cover the cost, your insurance company may require a prior authorization.
If you do not have type 2 diabetes, Hello Alpha is not able to assist in processing a prior authorization for diabetes medications used off-label to treat obesity, such as Trulicity, Ozempic, Rybelsus, Mounjaro, and Victoza.
If you submit a weight loss visit and your prior authorization request is denied by your insurance company, or if our team is not able to assist in processing a prior authorization because you do not meet the requirements for a weight loss medication, you are not eligible for a refund of your Alpha Plus+ plan fee.
Many people have turned to compounded medications in the face of supply shortages. Compounded medications are prepared by special pharmacies licensed to prepare medications at the request of healthcare providers.
Compounded medications are not generic medications.
Hello Alpha providers prescribe to a pharmacy that meets our high standards for providing high quality care. This pharmacy specializes in compounding semaglutide base and not semaglutide salts, which are not the same active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy. To ensure compliance with applicable law, we cannot send compounded prescriptions to other pharmacies.
Subject to availability and applicable law, Hello Alpha currently offers compounded semaglutide as multi-dose vials that require the use of a needle and syringe for weekly injections. Although many have used compounded semaglutide to safely perform self-injections, if you are not comfortable filling and using a needle and syringe to self-inject, ask your Hello Alpha provider for other alternatives.
The FDA allows compounding pharmacies to compound medications under certain circumstances, but it is important to note that compounded medications, including compounded semaglutide, are not FDA approved. The FDA does not verify the safety or effectiveness of compounded drugs.
The total monthly cost of compounded semaglutide depends on your current prescribed dose. Pricing starts at $139 for an initial 4-week supply.
These costs are in addition to the monthly cost for your Alpha Plus+ membership.
The following costs are subject to change. The dose amounts below reflect the dose in each weekly injection.
We are now also offering 3 and 6-month supply of compounded semaglutide, for a limited time only. The 3 and 6-month compounded semaglutide programs include Alpha Plus+ membership for the duration of the program.
Compounded semaglutide prescriptions are ordered specifically for an individual patient from our partner The Pharmacy Hub. Please note that once you agree to pay for a compounded medication, the order is not cancelable and non-refundable.
The cost of medication depending on whether you choose to use health insurance or pay cash (out of pocket).
Our providers only prescribe medication based on clinical guidelines. Alpha Membership does not guarantee a prescription.
Please note: During supply shortages, and as an alternative to FDA-approved branded products, where your provider determines GLP-1 medications are appropriate, and where available depending on your state, your provider may prescribe a compounded drug. Compounded drugs prescribed by Hello Alpha Providers are prepared by a licensed sterile compounding manufacturer and fulfilled by Alpha's partner pharmacy, in compliance with state law. Although compounded drugs are permitted to be prescribed under federal law, and although the active ingredients compare to brand name medications, compounded medications are not generic, nor are not FDA-approved and do not undergo the same safety, effectiveness, or manufacturing review as branded medications. Zepbound(TM) and Wegovy(TM) are brand name medications that are FDA-approved for weight loss. Ozempic(TM) is a brand name, FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes treatment, but may be prescribed off-label for weight loss at a healthcare provider’s discretion.
1,2 Although the active ingredient is comparable to the referenced brand name medications, compounded medications, including compounded semaglutide, is not a generic medication, nor is it FDA approved. The FDA does not verify the safety or effectiveness of compounded drugs.
